Room for the River: the Biesbosch
In the framework of the ‘Room for the River’ program, the 2,000-hectare Noordwaard area in the Dutch Biesbosch region is de-poldered and partly turned into a flow area.
The Ministry of Waterways and Public Works has engaged an ARCADIS-led consortium to elaborate this plan. On the basis of a large number of studies – into issues such as environmental impact, hydraulic, geohydrological and soil aspects, ecological and physical landscape consequences, effects on housing, agriculture and recreation – a preferred alternative will be selected, later to be specified in a construction plan and cost estimate.
