A number of Dutch companies operate in niche markets associated with off-shore civil engineering. Dutch expertise is used for example, by oil and gas production and exploration companies around the world.

A good example is Fugro BV, the biggest player in the field of probing subsoils for the construction of pipelines and constructions for the oil and gas industry. Partly thanks to the high oil prices , this cluster offers promising opportunities for the Dutch specialised companies and suppliers. The Netherlands also has a strong knowledge base in the upstream of the oil and gas industry: finding and producing oil and gas fields.
