Urban water management

Urban water management

The Urban Water Management cluster is concerned with managing the quantity and quality of urban water, and specifically with the physical planning of urban areas. Only by coordination between these fields the quality standards can be reached.

Promising areas here are:

  • building with water and in water
  • multi-purpose use of space
  • urban flood management

Water management should be integrated into overall urban management in other countries as it has been in the Netherlands. The distinctive role of the Netherlands lies specifically in its integral approach at the level of the river basin, and its approach to water quality. Usually new alliances are constantly needed (both within the Netherlands and with foreign partners) to establish innovations firmly in the global and European markets. The European Water Framework Directive and the Millennium Development Goals offer direct opportunities for such alliances.
